Fast, Faster, and Fastest! One Word…Jamaica

Is it in the water or what?!!!

It’s official……Jamaica has the fastest runners in the world. The Jamaican sprinters have definitely left their mark in Beijing at the 2008 Olympics. Not only have they DOMINATED the track, but they also broke a few records and made a couple of 1st-in-history statistics as well. If you haven’t been keeping up here’s the run down. We’ll help keep count of the stats….

It was Usain Bolt who started the Jamaican reign by winning the gold medal in the men’s 100m in world record time of 9.69 (stat #1). Not only was it a world record BUT it’s the first time in history a man has run the distance in under 9.7 seconds (stat #2).  Then it was the women’s turn. The gold was captured by Jamaica’s 21 year old Shelly Ann-Fraiser in a time of 10.78 seconds. Who won silver and bronze? Well her teammates of course! They tied for second giving Jamaica a complete SWEEP in the women’s 100m. It’s the first sweep of medals in a women’s 100 by any nation at any Olympics or world championships (stat#3). After never winning Olympic gold in the 100m, Jamaica now has two! (stat #4).

Now on to the men’s 200m. Who won the gold?….Come on now, who said lighting couldn’t strike twice?! It was Usain Bolt again in world record time of 19.30 seconds (stat#5). Bolt has won gold in both sprints, and is the only man ever to break the world record in both sprints in the same Olympics (stat#6). And of course the winner of the women’s 200m came from Jamaica as well. Veronica Campbell-Brown flashed past the competition and took the gold in 21.74 seconds. The bronze medal winner also from Jamaica. In all, Jamaica has capped the first sweep of all four men’s and women’s Olympic sprints in 20 years (stat#7).  Continuing the streak, Melanie Walker won gold in the women’s 400m hurdles and the men won the 4×100 meter relay.

Now those are truly some impressive stats! Congrats to Jamaica!
